Greece: From a football team to a movement for inclusion

Passion Pathways Across Europe
Stories from the Progression Pathways in Social Sports project

Within the European project Progression Pathways in Social Sports (PPSS), organizations across six countries work toward one shared ambition: creating progression pathways for people in vulnerable situations through sport. In Greece, the organization Diogenes NGO – Shedia shows how this ambition can grow organically, starting from a simple idea and evolving into a wide range of inclusive activities.

Operated by Diogenes NGO, Shedia focuses on supporting people experiencing homelessness and poverty, offering them opportunities to reconnect with society and rebuild their lives.

Sport as a first step to personal growth

At Diogenes NGO – Shedia sport is much more than physical activity. It is a tool to create safe and inclusive spaces where people feel welcomed, regardless of their background or personal history. The organization works with a diverse group of participants, including young adults, older people, and women who have experienced domestic violence.

The range of activities reflects this diversity. From football and basketball to dance, pétanque and capoeira, Diogenes NGO – Shedia creates opportunities for everyone to participate in a way that suits them. Innovative approaches such as “Baskin.” The unique aspect of Baskin is that children with any type of disability – whether physical or intellectual – can play together.

These activities are designed to support personal growth and development. Participants gain confidence, build social connections, and rediscover a sense of purpose. As Diogenes NGO – Shedia emphasizes: the goal is not to create better athletes, but to empower people in becoming better versions of themselves.

Building through listening and experience

With years of experience through its street magazine and social initiatives, Diogenes NGO – Shedia already had a strong foundation before joining PPSS. The organization has long combined social support with creative approaches such as upcycling and recycling, as well as community-building programs like the “Walking football,” which connects older participants and helps strengthen their confidence and social interaction.

At the same time, Diogenes NGO – Shedia’s approach is not built on a fixed structure, but on continuous development. Activities evolve through feedback from participants, and new ideas are tested and implemented along the way. This creates a flexible and responsive program that reflects the real needs of the community.

Through PPSS, Diogenes NGO – Shedia has been able to further develop and add more structure to its sports activities. The project supports the creation of clearer progression opportunities, while staying true to its inclusive and participant-driven philosophy. An important part of this process is listening to participants, ensuring that their experiences directly shape the program as it continues to grow.

From uncertainty to ambition

A powerful example of the impact of this approach is Ryan, who grew up in an orphanage and through sport, managed to find a way forward. He went on to participate in the 2025 Homeless World Cup in Oslo. After participating in the Homeless World Cup, he returned with renewed motivation and was trained as a coach within the program. Today, Ryan is not only continuing his personal development, but he is also supporting others. He inspired other children from the orphanage to take part in PPSS activities. At the same time, he has gone back to school and is working toward his dream of becoming a doctor.

His journey highlights the essence of PPSS: creating real, tangible pathways for growth, where participants can transform their lives and become role models for others.

Looking ahead
For Diogenes NGO – Shedia the work does not stop with PPSS. The organization aims to continue specific activities developed during the project, working closely with volunteers and exploring how participants themselves can take on leading roles. By doing so, Diogenes NGO – Shedia strengthens its approach of creating opportunities that grow from within the community.

By creating safe spaces, embracing diversity and focusing on personal development, Diogenes NGO – Shedia shows how sport can open doors to new opportunities and a brighter future.
